CHAPTER 19

Courtney

“Shit.” I scrambled to get my shirt back on, so I could answer the knock, but all I wanted to do was scream at them to go away.

When I was fully dressed, I took a deep breath and opened the door. Standing there with a to-go bag from Cheerful Chicken was Rachel. And to her side was Shay.

What the hell are they doing here?

“Hey, you two. What’s going on?” I kept the door partially closed so they wouldn’t see Piper sitting at the table. I didn’t want them asking questions.

“Why is your shirt inside out?” Rachel stared at me accusingly.

“I didn’t realize it was. I must have had it like this all day.”

“I thought you were sick? Why would you get dressed up?” So much for avoiding an inquisition. Rachel was like a dog with a bone.

“When you canceled last night, and Rachel said you weren’t feeling well today, we were worried.” Shay’s voice was full of concern, and I hated having to lie to them.

“I was sick, but then I started feeling better…” I had to stop this. The lies would stack up, and I was afraid I couldn’t keep them all straight. “That’s not true.”

They both looked at me with hurt in their eyes.

“Are you avoiding us?” Rachel asked.

“Yes and no.” That probably wasn’t what she wanted to hear, but I needed to be honest.

If I denied Piper again, I might lose her, which was the last thing I wanted. I opened the door wider, and they peeked over my shoulder and saw Piper.

“What’s she doing here?” Rachel appeared confused, but a knowing look crossed Shay’s face. Fear flooded my body, but I was tired of letting it rule me.

“Piper is my…” Well, we hadn’t gotten to the labeling part of our relationship, and I didn’t want to put words in her mouth.

“Girlfriend.” She filled in the blank as she came over and joined the conversation.

“You think you’re ready for that?” I felt like I’d put her on the spot, and she only said girlfriend because I was out in the deep end and couldn’t swim.

“Do you not want me to be?” She gave me a questioning look, and I couldn’t hide my feelings for her.

“Of course, I do. But…” I stopped myself from continuing this private conversation when I heard Rachel clear her throat. As I turned toward her and Shay, I offered a shy smile. “I’m sorry I made you worry about me. I shouldn’t have lied.”

“Here.” Rachel held out the bag to me. “I brought you chicken noodle soup and crackers.” Unfortunately, she didn’t seem as forgiving as I hoped she would be.

I graciously accepted the food, although I didn’t deserve it. “Thank you. I appreciate how much you care, and I promise to be a better friend.”

“I’m proud of you, Court. I know how big of a deal this is for you.” Shay leaned in and hugged me. “You know I’m here if you need to talk,” she whispered, and her compassion moved me.
